Massage – what is it?

Massage – what is it?

Massage is defined as the systematic manipulation of the soft tissues of the
body for a curative effect. Soft tissues are made more pliable through massage
to promote circulation and blood flow and bring about healing effects: physical
and psychological changes for general wellbeing.

What does it involve?

The system of massage
treatment involves the therapist using their hands to apply pressure on your
body. Therapists use various techniques to work on the body: stroking and gliding
(effleurage), kneading the soft tissues (petrissage), or what is termed
‘percussion’ (tapotement).

What are the ‘real’ benefits?

Massage therapy is
extremely beneficial to people leading busy lifestyles suffering from what is
now commonly encountered work related stress. Massage will not only aid with
mental relaxation but will work on physical symptoms of back and neck pain that
comes from sitting for an extended period of time at a desk or from physical labor.

The importance of taking regular massage has heightened in recent times as more people recognize how beneficial it is as a way to counteract the effects of
sitting in front of a computer screen daily. Corporations are beginning to realize
these benefits for staff wellbeing and as a way to increase productivity. By
offering mobile massage therapy as a part of employee benefits (see
mobile massage) in the workplace it could go a long way to
help reduce staff stress levels, which in turn will make for a more cooperative
relaxed work environment, and then aid productivity. More obviously if employers spend on massage for their staff they might reduce the cost of lost labor through sick days. Work related stress is a serious problem in society leading
to poor health, disease, and death. This situation might be helped if employers
take the opportunity to enlist the services of a professional Massage Therapist
who will educate about the benefits of relaxation and massage.

Many people wait until
they are already in pain or suffering spinal injuries before turning to
massage, but why let it get that bad? It is a good idea to take regular massage
as a preventative measure so that such injuries do not occur. Regular massage
maintenance will increase your overall sense of wellbeing for optimum physical
and mental health, helping you to achieve your goals.

 Massage is used to treat
a wide range of disorders, such as:

  1. Insomnia
  2. Muscular tension
  3. Headaches and migraines
  4. Work related stress
  5. Repetitive strain injury
  6. Depression
  7. Arthritis
  8. Eating disorders and digestive dysfunction
  9. Pre-natal pregnancy conditions
  10. Fibrositis
  11. Spondylitis
  12. Frozen shoulder
  13. Whiplash
  14. Sports and dancing injuries

The power of healing in
massage is the energy that flows through the therapist’s hands in touch to
refresh, regenerate and revitalize.

Types of Massage

Types of Massage – what type of massage is best for me?

Types of Massage – what type of massage is best for me?

There are several forms
of massage on offer, and it can be confusing to know what will work best for a
particular ailment or condition. Some massage concentrates more on relaxing the
client whilst others will work more deeply at repairing damaged muscle tissue.
It may be that you need to try several forms of massage to find what works best
for you. You can find more information regarding specific types of massage on
the Natural Therapies Pages directory. Here is a brief summary of some commonly
found massage therapies:

  1. Chinese massage – is a part of traditional Chinese medicine. This massage therapy is closely related to herbal medicine, acupuncture and acupressure. Massage treatment creates movement and is
therefore seen as a treatment for pain relief. It is almost always given
on a couch or a stool.

  2. Connective tissue massage – this technique is connected to the Myofascial release technique, and does not involve the use of oil or lotion. It can relieve chronic tension, improve posture and relieve painful symptoms of chronic diseases such as Arthritis, Tendonitis, TMJ and Sciatica.
  3. Hot stone massage – aids the client to experience deep relaxation. The therapist places heated basalt stones on the body’s acupressure points. A series of Swedish Massage style techniques is used with the therapist holding smooth stones and applying essential oils to work away muscle tension.
  4. Deep tissue massage – focuses on the deeper layers of muscle tissue. It is designed to reach the deep sections of thick muscles, specifically
    the individual muscle fibres.

  5. Remedial massage – works to heat muscles and tendons that are
damaged, impaired or knotted. It holistically treats the whole body and traces the discomfort back to the original cause. It uses specialized techniques to support and speed up the body's own repair mechanisms. The
  6. massage is applied directly to the skin usually with an oil lubricant.
Passive stretching moves are also employed.

  7. Shiatsu – is a traditional hands-on Japanese healing therapy’ originating from the Japanese amma therapeutic massage. It is
quite an intense form of massage whereby the therapist uses thumbs,
elbows, forearms, feet and knees to apply pressure on the body. This is combined with stretches, joint rotations and joint manipulation to give an all-over treatment.

  8. Swedish massage – is a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and shaking motions that apply
pressure between muscles and bones, rubbing in the same direction as the flow of blood returning to the heart. Swedish Massage feels good, is relaxing and invigorating.

  9. Thai massage – This is a more physical manipulation of the body using passive stretching and gentle pressure with the hands and feet. Allied with yoga stretching movements, this massage will help to adjust
the skeletal structure, increase flexibility, relieve muscular and joint tension, stimulate internal organs and balance the body's energy system. The effect is both relaxing as well as energizing. This type of massage is performed on a floor mat.

What should I expect
from a massage session?

Massage normally takes
place in a private room or space. Clients are expected to partially undress and
are given a towel or robe to place over themselves. The exception to this is with ‘Mobile Massage’ whereby the client may remain clothed and is not always in a private space. Most massage will take place on a massage
table lying down, but in some cases the massage takes place whilst you are
seated on a massage chair , or on a floor mat Massage therapy can last for 10 mins to hour depending what is

10 Fantastic Benefits of Massage for Men and Women

10 Fantastic Benefits of Massage for Men and Women

More and more research is providing evidence for the
health benefits of massage and it has become a well-recognized and respected
form of complementary or alternative medicine. There are many good reasons for
getting a massage but here are ten of the best!

1. It makes you feel GREAT! Massage has been found in clinical studies to
boost mood and can help alleviate symptoms of depression and sadness.
Aromatherapy massage uses essential oils, which have medicinal properties and
can be chosen for their mood-enhancing qualities. Neroli, sweet orange,
bergamot, and lavender are all known for their mood elevating qualities.

2. Massage helps you relax! If you are feeling stressed or uptight, massage
is for you. The deep, soothing, and rhythmical strokes of a good massage should
feel pleasurable to receive and they help the body to unwind as tensions are
released. Massage can help you get into a place of very deep relaxation, which
is essential for the body to heal.

3. Massage helps reduce muscular tension and can alleviate muscular aches,
pains, and injuries. Massage helps alleviate stiff neck, pain in the joints,
back pain, and so on. Massage helps block pain receptors in the nervous system
and it increases blood flow to the muscles. This can help increase joint
mobility, and so can be beneficial for conditions such as arthritis.

4. Massage helps reduce symptoms of anxiety. By lowering the cortisol
levels in the body, massage helps calm the mind and relax the body. Anxiety is
inevitably reduced through this process.

5. Massage helps alleviate tension headaches. Tension headaches can be
caused by postural misalignment or by muscular tension in other areas of the
body. Massage relaxes the entire body and this release can result in the
diminishment of tension headaches.

6. It helps you get a good night’s sleep. Massage helps you relax so
deeply that you may feel very sleepy after a session. If you plan to have your
massage later in the day, it can lead you into a deeply restorative and restful
sleep.

7. It helps you detoxify the body. Massage helps stimulate the lymph
system, which helps carry toxic waste from the muscles, organs, and tissues.
This can help with digestion and will improve your overall health.

8. It can even help you improve posture. Postural imbalance can be caused
by muscular tension. Massage helps the muscles to deeply release any tension.
Once relaxed, the body can return to its natural state of balance and correct
alignment can ensue.

9. Trigger point therapy, myofascial, and Swedish massage can ease
symptoms of fibromyalgia. These techniques help flush toxins from the body and
decrease tension. Specifically, trigger point therapy deactivates trigger
points using finger pressure. Swedish massage provides relaxation and stress
relief that helps ease fibromyalgia pain. Myofascial Release applies gentle
pressure to connective tissue that helps alleviate pain and restore motion by
elongating muscle fibers.

10. Massage can help improve cardiovascular health. By reducing tension and
increasing blood flow and lowering cortisol levels, blood circulation is
improved, stress is lowered, and the heart can operate at an optimum level with
less stress. This leads to improved heart health.

So… if you were in any doubt about the efficacy of
massage, hopefully by now you can see there are so many good reasons to get one
that it wouldn’t make sense not to. Before any of the health benefits, you get
to feel nourished and nurtured by some kind, caring hands. You end up feeling like
a new person!

You’re so relaxed it’s as if you’ve been away on a
two-week vacation! If you’ve never tried a massage, you don’t know what you’ve
been missing! Not only will you feel fantastic but also some of your health
problems may simply fade away after a few sessions, or at the least be very
much improved.

There are many different forms of massage, including
Swedish, deep tissue, reflexology, aromatherapy massage, hot stone, sports
massage, and various others. Each has its own purpose, but the most popular one
that helps with various types of ailments and for general wellness is the
Swedish massage that uses kneading motions.

Massage is also flexible, since you can choose to
get a full body session or one that addressesspecific trouble spots on the body,
like the neck, feet, or back.

Regular massages offer
cumulative benefits for the mind, body, and spirit.

Corona virus policy

Corona Virus Policy

 Corona Virus Policy

This policy outlines some of the key measures
I have taken to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus (COVID-19). Please
note the content may be subject to change.

Adhering to guidelines

Throughout the pandemic, I will be following guidelines issued
by the government, NHS, other relevant authorities and my professional
association, the Federation of Holistic Therapists, regarding safe and hygienic
practice and the use of any personal protective equipment (PPE).

COVID-19 Risk Assessment

I have carried out a full risk assessment, in line with guidance
from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), in order to:

· identify what work
activity or situations might cause transmission of the virus;

· think about who could
be at risk;

· decide how likely it
is that someone could be exposed; and to

· act to remove the
activity or situation, or if this isn’t possible, control the risk.

Health screening

Prior to seeing any of my clients, I will be:

· Monitoring my own
health and deferring treatments if I have COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19.

· contacting my clients
24 hours in advance and deferring any treatments if: they have COVID-19 or
symptoms of COVID-19; are clinically extremely vulnerable and shielding; anyone
in their household has COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19; they have been in
close contact with someone who has symptoms of COVID-19 in the past 14 days;
they have been contacted by the NHS Test and Trace Service and told to self
isolate.

· asking my clients to
call and cancel and defer treatment on the morning of their appointment if they
have a temperature or other symptoms of COVID-19.

Enhanced cleaning and hygiene measures

I have introduced enhanced cleaning and hygiene measures between
clients, which includes washing and disinfecting any non-porous surfaces and
therapy equipment, such as chairs and couches, and replacing any porous or
single-use items, such as towels and couch roll. Strict personal hygiene
measures will also be adhered to, including regular handwashing/ sanitising.

Adapting or restricting treatments

It may be necessary for me to adapt or restrict certain
treatments, in order to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 and/or protect my
clients’ health and safety. Any clients likely to be impacted will be advised
as soon as possible.

Maintaining social distancing

Please note that while many treatments involve close contact, I
will be observing social distancing measures wherever possible. This might
include, for example, maintaining an appropriate distance during the
consultation process, and when arriving and leaving for an appointment.

Cancellations policy

If a treatment is cancelled or deferred at short notice because
my client has COVID-19 or has symptoms of COVID-19, any standard cancellation
fees will be waivered. The client will be asked to kindly confirm in writing
that their appointment has been cancelled or deferred because they have
COVID-19 or symptoms of COVID-19.
